Dennis Reflects

Dennis says he has been reflecting on his life.He is thinking he might be mellowing out just a little bit. He thinks he might be able to commit to being mellow every Saturday and alternating Tuesdays.

Dennis was a nice enough kitten. He loved to get attention and could not get enough head pats and tummy rubs. He was picky about food from day one and would casually go on a hunger strike for a week if necessary. Dennis feels food must be savory and presentation is important also. He needed a lot of 'alone time' too, because he was prone to little bouts of depression. He had mood swings and could be very demanding. He once complained so frequently and so loudly, that he lost his voice for a few months. Dennis was still popular with all of the humans despite his moodiness because who doesn't like a kitten jumping into their lap and falling asleep? Who doesn't like a kitten who snuggles up to you and looks at you admiringly? Dennis is still that kitten. He knows how to show love to humans.
He never bites, and he's a gentleman at the Dr.'s office. (putty in the Vet's hands.)

I sense the beginning of memoirs here, Dennis. As a title, Putty in the Vet's Hands has a certain haunting and lyrical quality to it, I find. The right agent could probably sell the movie rights on that title and a ten-line synopsis alone.
Should you ever need a ghostwriter? Rollmops says he'll take it on at the daily market rate on Baltic herring.

I swear, Dennis and Elmo are twins separated at birth.

Elmo is as moody as the day is long and has been since his kittenhood. I had no idea cats could be moody and sulk and pout and pitch fits and hold grudges until Elmo came into my life.

Elmo, too, has lost his voice. Twice. When I found him as a stray, starving kitten, he had no voice for most of the first year of his life. It was the most pathetic yet endearing thing to look at him and see that little mouth open up and let out a silent meow.

He lost his voice again recently, a year ago, when I went to Vegas. Elmo has abandonment issues (he obviously got separated from his mommy somehow and the rest of his litter because when I found him, he was too young to be roaming around on his own), and suffers great anxiety if I exit a room too abruptly--he'll let out the saddest, loneliest, most searching, woeful meows and I'll have to call from the other room to let him know I'm still here--so when I went to Vegas for a weekend, holy moly, not only did he lose his voice, but he simultaneously clung to me and deeply resented me for a month upon my return.

He'd open up his mouth to meow and this weird whistle would come out. Poor guy. It's taken about a full year for his voice to recover.

Elmo isn't the most forgiving animal in the world. But he loves me in a way maybe no other animal ever will (he "imprinted" on me because I spent the first week of his life checking on him hourly and holding him to make sure he wasn't going to slip away and die--he was that thin and starved--I could see his full skeleton beneath his skin and his hair was falling out). So, I put up with the moodiness. Because, in the end, Elmo's a lot like me.

Dennis, I don't know how old you are, but Elmo assures you that as you age, you will continue to mellow. You'll still be a little pissy from time to time (pissy as in mood--the other pissy goes without saying, ha!) but you'll find that you won't be able to hold a grudge as long, your bad and sad moods won't last as long, and you might actually find yourself feeling from time to time, dare I say (Elmo would never admit to it)....

happy.

I am very impressed that Dennis never bites. I have become less mellow as I get older. I was a very sweet kitten, but I am getting bitier as time goes by. I do not know how to growl or hiss though.

I couldn't feel more like Dennis. I think I am a vacation Dennis human.

Dennis was born in 2000. Like Elmo, when Dennis lost his voice he never gave up trying to talk, and his mouth was always moving, his eyes full of emotion. When the meows turn to raspy croaks, Dennis knows to rest his pipes.

A memoir is an excellent idea

Nice to meet you, Dennis. Thank you for saying Cameron is handsome and Crystal is pretty. Crystal had a nice birthday and he is glad you stopped by.

We are sorry your heart was broken. Daisy is a beautiful kitty and we're sure she has broken many hearts. But if she weren't spoken for, you might have had a chance.

Is it true that you should never look a cat in the eye?

Dennis likes staring at humans, making real good eye contact- that way you get better head pats, food and general attention. Tuxedo Cats are known for their friendly eye contact.

I'll add that Dennis is a wonderful teacher. He uses words that I never read elsewhere. "Mellow". Who is able to write this word about himself ?
Dennis is incredible. He does love himself "enough". That's a good lesson. It is necessary to love one self enough. If not, who else will love you ?
Thank you Dennis, dear cat.
(I'm happy you recovered your voice...)

Some cats are like that. Nefertiti also can go on a hunger strike if she doesn't get what she wants. She has become a very expensive cat. But we love her so in spite, or maybe because of that. And Moumoune eats only croquettes and mice. Humans are there to obey and worship the cats.
