Dennis does seem normal much of the time. Dennis naps a lot, hides when new people come into the house, looks out the window, and hurries to greet his people at the door when they come home. Dennis also looks normal and snuggles on laps like other cats. But that is where normal behavior ends. Dennis feels so entitled when it comes to feeding times, (every half hour would probably make him happy) brushing, petting and affection. Dennis sees another cat getting brushed and becomes enraged. He will rush over and push the other cat away from the human and the brush.
Dennis loves to be hugged and kissed, but if another cat walks into the room he will begin to hiss and growl and possibly throw a complete tantrum, jumping to the floor and running around, then knocking things off countertops, and finally knocking over the recycling bin or getting into the trash.
Dennis growls and shrieks during his tantrums. Dennis has a tantrum almost every other day. If another cat is snuggling with a human, Dennis will insert himself , wedge himself between the human and the other cat, almost always sitting on the other cat's head in the process. Dennis sits down hard and it appears to be deliberate.
Dennis screams when getting his nails clipped, howling as if he is dying. (The other cats just act like ladies getting a mani-pedi at the salon.) The Vet can't find anything physically wrong with Dennis.
Dennis seems normal.
Finally, Dennis is meeker than any cat on earth when he goes to the vet--he never struggles, in fact he goes completely limp and allows the Vet to handle him without making a sound.

Dennis wants to be an only cat.
Dennis, you're one gweat purrsonawity!
Dear Dennis Conrad Bryant: My name is Dr Cornelia Von Asperger. I am presently conducting an ethological study on early socialization patterns in felines. To this end, I regularly consult those blogs featuring cats both large and not so large. Your personality profile constitutes a subset all its own. I would be thrilled to include you in my research sample. (Your sitting behavior is particularly intriguing.) I will peruse your blog regularly for any indication of your willingness to participate in my study. Yours truly,
Dr Cornelia Von Asperger

Dennis, I am in awe of your behavior. I wish I could growl and shriek! I do not know how to growl. I do know how to bite. Hard!
So does Elmo.
If Elmo had is way, he'd be the only cat in the world.
Elmo went to the vet last week. Like Dennis, Elmo goes completely limp when being handled by the vet.
I put Elmo down on the floor because I wanted to see Elmo's limp (I suspect Elmo, who turns 14 this spring, has arthritis in his front limbs), and Elmo proceeded to become a puddle of cat on the floor---he literally sank down into himself, his legs disappeared. He collapsed.
Alas, there's not much one can do about cat arthritis. And I didn't receive a definitive diagnosis. The vet suspects I'm right though--since Elmo's limp seems to come and go, as does his badder than bad mood (he'd lately been completely intolerant of Bob's presence--if Bob came anywhere within Elmo's personal space, which is frankly, enormous, Elmo would hiss and swat and snarl and growl and attack Bob, whereas previously, he was letting the little dude come up to him and interact a little bit).
It sucks getting old. Even when you're a cat.
Like I said previously, I'm quite certain that Elmo and Dennis would be best friends if either of them would allow another cat anywhere near them. (grin)
(oh, and treatment? If one were weatlthy, and the arthritis was severe, surgical procedures might be suggested. But cats and steroids don't mix. So, two baby aspirin over the course of a week, if Elmo's pain seems extreme--but even that's risky because cats don't metabolize asprin or any of the OTC pain relievers effectively. Glucosamine is all the rage right now and is proving to be effective in human beings but there is no feline dosage yet for veterinarians and the dog dosage is very expensive. My vet said I can give Elmo a quarter of a 500 milligram glucosamine daily of the arthritis seems to get progressively worse over time but it would have to be a long term commitment since the glucosamine only proves effective over long term use. The newer treatment that I hadn't read about involves Omega-3's which my vet said is the other new treatment circulating among owners of arthritic cats. So far, no literature is available to back up the efficacy of this treatment, but as the vet said, it probably wouldn't hurt to give it a try. After all, Omega-3s are found in fish oil gel tabs, so all I'd have to do is squeeze it out onto Elmo's food (and hope he eats it...).
So, I bought a jar of fish oil gel tabs and some baby aspirin. Elmo hasn't limped since his trip to the vet. But then, he was probably scared limpless after going to the "bad place."
(grin)
I know....I'm going on and on. I apologize. But it's almost over now.
When Elmo got home from the vet (in the carrier, Elmo makes this weird, yelping sound that is indescriable--the neighbor lady thought a small child was crying), Bob walked up to him, sniffed Elmo's feet and tail and proceeded to go into a full, slow-motion fluff. He walked stiff-legged and suspicious around Elmo for a few hours before finally warming up to him again.
I'm done now.
Over and out.
A cat with arthritis--that sounds painful--and fish oil sounds like something the cat might like to take.
There must be natural cures developed for cats--and cat massage therapists and such like.
it sounds like Dennis just has Drama Issues!

but why would anyone want to be normal? kimy likes dennis very much -- I don't like getting my nails clipped either... this was a very good post for letting us get to know dennis more. thank you.
And thus is the great paradox of Dennis...he seems like a tough guy, but he's really a softie.
Life can't be too good for Chedwick.

It is so nice to meet you! We can not believe how many similar "issues" you have like our PooPoo. We don't know what to do any more. Why are you and PooPoo so difficult.....ah, I mean "normal? We will be back to see you again soon!
